A. Hardware
1. To monitor your computer heat, get SpeedFan:
This little freeware tool will monitor your computer's fan speeds, cpu and hard drive temperatures, etc.
Don't block any of the air vents on the laptop, such as if it's on your desk, make sure there's enough air flow around the computer. There are laptop shelves you can buy that lifts up the laptop so there's air flow through the bottom of the laptop, which you might want to consider if it's going to be running 24/7.
Set your computer Power saving settings to go into Sleep mode and turn off the display and hard drive when it's idle.
Most laptops should be built fairly sturdy these days, but there are things you can take extra care of if you want to be really careful. For one thing in regards to the cover, open/close the cover with both hands, one on each corner, rather than with one hand on one corner. The balanced pressure causes less stress on the hinges. Also, many people cringe at the idea of walking around with an open laptop because that can cause stress too, so if you're extra cautious, you might want to close the laptop before picking it up to move around.
B. Software
2. File size doesn't really matter. But you will definitely want to organize all your files. I assume you're using Windows? Many people keep their files in their My Documents folder. Others, as do I, keep my personal files in other larger categories right off the root drive. How you organize doesn't really matter so long as you do organize and you use an organization structure that works for you.
First of all, startup master software download keep your personal files separate from your applications. Most applications are in Program Files, some are installed right off the root, or in other directories. But don't save any of your created files with the applications.
Next, use an organization structure that will work for you. For example, you may have a separate folder for all your music files, your Word files, your Excel files, your pictures, etc. And then inside your Word folder, you may have separate folders for School, Work, Personal, etc. And inside School, you may have separate folders for different classes etc.
Or you might want to organize by subject rather than file type, for example all your School, Work, Personal folders are the top level directory, and divide from there. Organize however you will be able to find things easier; so you know where to look when you want to find a file, for example, to find my biology report, I know to look in my School/Classes/Biology/BIO101 folder. Having a very structured directory system like this will minimize having to search for all your files.
3. The items in your Startup folder are only applications. As you've found out, there are a lot of things that run in the background. Open up Services (Start > Administrative Tools > Services or Start > Control Panel > Administrative Serves > Component Services and click on Services). You will see all the services registered to your system. It will show what's running, what's starting up automatically, and if you want, you can stop them. Some are absolutely necessary for Windows to functions, some are optional Windows functions, and others are 3rd party, for example, maybe your anti-virus. If you're unsure of something, Google it to find out more about it and see if it's really something you need or not. If not, you can stop it, and then change the startup from automatic to manual or disabled.
Another nice free utility that helps with this is WinPatrol.
4. It's hard to say what can be stalling your computer. It's not necessarily a virus. It could by your anti-virus or other security program running real time and checking everything you're doing. Only way to be sure which program is causing the problem, is shut them down one by one until your computer is not stalling anymore to find out which one is using up the resources.
Disk maintenance helps good performance.
Once every 3 months run the 'disk check' which will look for physical problems on the Hard Drive disk sectors.
For XP do this: Start> my computer> right click 'c' drive> properties> tools> error check: here check both boxes, then OK. The next time you cold boot your system, this process will run (maybe 30-60 minutes) fixing disk errors(if any).
Another disk performance item is to 'compress contents' and 'allow index service'. These help optimize file recovery speed & save disk space.
Start> my computer> right click 'c' drive> properties> genestartup master software downloadral tab: here check both boxes & ok; don't freak out, it may say 3 days or more to run, but this drops dramatically as the process advances; just walk away and let 'er run for the duration: it will self close when done. Depending on the files & sizes, it may take several hours to do (maybe do it at night before bed?).
When done, run 'CCleaner' & defrag.
Aside from removing any malware already installed on your system, you must turn off 3rd party cookies. This keeps un-requested cookies (pop-ups, URL's, etc.) from being displayed in your browser.
For Internet Explorer: go to Tools> Internet Options> Privacy> Advanced: here check 'Override automatic....' 'Allow session cookies' 'Allow 1st party cookies' & 'Block 3rd Party Cookies'.
For Firefox: go to Tools> Options> Privacy: here un-check 'Accept 3rd Party cookies'
Junk forced into your system will have to be extracted with Spybot, Ad Aware, and all available cleaners.
More? OK...
Go to Start> Control Panel> Power Options> Hibernate: here check the box.
I recommend shutdowns using the 'hibernate' method. It's nearly a zero power state; puts all open work (and Windows) onto the hard drive 'cache' for really fast startups; and if power is lost (storms, etc.) your document or picture you were working on won't be lost like it would be in 'Standby' mode.
To show this option when turning unit off; Start> Turn Off Computer> HOLD down 'Shift' key & 'Standby' becomes "Hibernate': then check.
Some systems have a 'crescent moon' key to go right to hibernate.
Forcing a shutdown with the power button is NOT a good option; only a last resort as it prevents Windows from 'housekeeping' files to get ready for the next startup, and will over time cause file corruption & break Windows.
Don't drop it, and don't spill things on it. Other then that there isn't a lot you can do. Don't move it really quickly while its running. If it accelerates to sharply this might cause the hard drive reader to scrap against on of the plates. If this happens to many times you could corrupt parts of your hard drive.
On the software side, there is pretty much nothing you need to do. If you feel its getting to filled with programs/junk you can reformat and reinstall windows to make it as like new as possible.
Processors wear out over time. The more your processor runs the sooner it is likely to wear out. You will have to buy a new computer eventually. everything wears out over time.
